Fractured

Vulnerability is a recurring theme in my work. That's why I work mostly with porcelain. The material  itself radiates  fragility because of its whiteness, thinness  and translucency.

These light pillars have a cracked and broken surface. The fractured skin suggests wounds, suffering. The metallic structures which support the porcelain columns are similar to a skeleton, supportive and at the same time weak. The porcelain cylinders were initially vertical and straight but during the firing at high temperature (1250°C) they got warped and distorted.  The light emphasizes the frailness of the porcelain but also symbolizes the power of hope.
